ABOUT THE NOVA SCOTIA GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG CLUB - Who we are and what we do.
A meeting was held at the home of Blois and Reta Boyd, March 19, 1961. Those attending were persons interested in organizing a German Shepherd Dog Club. The first slate of officers for the Club was: President, Blois Boyd; Vice-President, Floyd Rafuse; Secretary, Grace Rae; and Treasurer, Phyllis Gratton.
Only four months later, a Specialty Show was held on July 29, 1961, in conjunction with the Truro Dog Club. Judge Mary Southcott had 45 dogs to judge. The Club began to offer obedience training classes to the public in 1961, the first Club to do so in the Halifax / Dartmouth area.
In conjunction with the Halifax Kennel Club’s 1962 show, the Nova Scotia German Shepherd Dog Club put on the first Obedience Trial to be held in Nova Scotia with Mrs. Lille Smith as the judge.
The Nova Scotia German Shepherd Dog Club has achieved a number of “Firsts” in the Province of Nova Scotia. Among them are: first Club sponsored Breed Survey performed by Dr. William Redlich in 1964 and published in Volume 4 of the Breed Survey Books; first Obedience Trial; first All-Breed Temperament Test; first Tracking Test; and first National Specialty held in Nova Scotia in 1991, organized in conjunction with the other three German Shepherd Dog Clubs of the Maritime Provinces at that time.
The Club is constantly seeking new ways to achieve its objectives and raise the level of public awareness of the Club and the German Shepherd Dog. Visit our website at www.nsgsdc.com
Two Conformation Specialty Shows are held each year. All-breed Obedience Trials and Rally Obedience Trials are held in combination with the Conformation Specialty Shows. The Club actively promotes obedience entries and offers unofficial classes such as Graduate Novice, Veterans, Brace and Versatility.
Conformation Boosters are held yearly in varying numbers, depending on the expertise of individual Group 7 judges.
As well, the Club often hosts the German Shepherd Dog Club of Canada Eastern Region National Futurity Show. This show enables breeders to compare the producing abilities of various bloodlines.
Tracking Tests have been held annually since 1994. This test gives those who are interested in this sport an opportunity to gain CKC tracking titles. It also provides those interested in learning about tracking, track laying, etc., an opportunity to gain knowledge from a CKC tracking judge.
A Temperament Test has been held annually since 1988. This test is currently being held in October at the Cobequid Dog Show.
The Club also holds two Canadian Kennel Club Sanction Conformation and Obedience / Rally Obedience Correction Matches each year. These events offer an opportunity for exhibitors to practice and fine tune skills in both the conformation and obedience/rally obedience ring. Just as importantly, however, it provides an opportunity for perspective judges to put in the hours required to gain their judging license, as well as provides a training ground for ring stewards.
The Club also holds an annual Puppy Picnic for all dogs and puppies during the summer months. This is a social occasion where both experienced and inexperienced dogs and handlers may get together to socialize their puppies / dogs, play games, learn about different activities for dogs and have an opportunity to practice showing their dogs. A BBQ and Silent Auction are also available during this event.
Three sessions of dog training classes are offered to the public. Beginner classes for the family companion dog are available, as well as the obedience competition classes Pre-Novice, Novice, Open and Utility. The head instructor is Reta Boyd, a well-known Obedience Judge. Reta also offers Rally Obedience classes.
You can see that our Club is one that is very busy and works hard to provide opportunities for dog fanciers with varying interests, as well as a Club that provides events and assistance to other clubs in the area. We would like to thank you for your interest in this major fundraising endeavor. Your participation will be benefitted by many!
